After one hell of a winter, it appears we are finally moving towards some warmer weather. Thank goodness! For us, this winter’s challenges proved to be mostly water related- our automatic waterers are made of PVC pipe and don’t hold up well to a freeze. After rebuilding all of them a couple times, Andy and I decided to shut them off completely and hand water everyone until the weather improved enough to redesign and rebuild. Using Dr. Temple Grandin’s principles and designs for low-stress, humane animal handling (http://www.grandin.com/), we are in the midst of constructing our handling system for weighing and transporting our pigs. After drawing up the plans, cleaning, leveling, surveying, pouring concrete, and welding the posts and walls, we’re just about ready to weigh our pigs. The design utilizes the animals’ natural following behavior, and the circular crowd pen leads them to believe they’re returning to where they came from. The pasture was a graveyard of old projects that provided Home Place Pastures with many useful materials that could be used in innovative ways. Along with the barn, we set about recycling and cleaning up this area, spreading compost and hay and re-seeding where necessary. We torn down on old flight pen Dad had built in a scheme to restore the quail population, and cut the plastic into 4 foot sections for our electric fence posts (plastic doesn’t conduct electricity). We’ve still got a little work to do, but the pigs aren’t complaining
In 1930’s, our grandfather built two barns behind the shop for the mules and horses he used at that time to farm and work his cattle. As the use of these animals fell out practice, the barns decayed over the decades to the dilapidated state we started with in January.
Pigs are not horses, but we wanted this barn to be our focus of operation, where all of our pigs can come take shelter and rest when they are not out roaming the pastures. Our family has farmed the Home Place for a long time. As the face of agriculture has changed over the years, so has our land and infrastructure. One our main goals in setting out on this venture was to revive and restore parts of our farm that until this project had outlived their use or fallen into neglect.
